CBAM’s definitive phase has entered into force effective 1st January 2026, creating some notable impact on metals markets in APAC.

Join us for an interactive session on insights we have gleaned so far in 2026 and signposts for Asian exporters to watch:

  • Trade Flows & Pricing: EU buyers are shifting to delivered-duty-paid (DDP) terms, transferring CBAM risk to Asian sellers. Key European Platts price benchmarks rose partially in response to the new costs imposed by CBAM. Early 2026 seaborne trade data showed a drop in EU arrivals for select CBAM products, followed by a recovery through Q1.
  • Compliance Reality Check: Verification bottlenecks and gaps in granular emissions tracking are leaving Asian exporters reliant on punitive EU default values in the near term. Adding to this, the frameworks governing accredited verifiers and the deduction methodology for carbon prices paid in-country have yet to be finalized, heightening uncertainty for exporters seeking to reduce their compliance exposure.
  • Methodology Shifts Favoring Low-Carbon Routes: Separate steel benchmarks by production method and removal of zero-emissions treatment for pre-consumer scrap reduce optimization room. Proposed 2028 expansion to ~180 downstream steel and aluminum products (white goods, auto parts, machinery) will extend CBAM beyond semis, creating embedded-carbon liabilities for Asian exporters of finished goods.
Registration closes on May 5, 5pm SGT (GMT +8).
